Every year during the summer break, a group of about 25 BiolSoc members go on a field trip to Heron Island, on the Great Barrier Reef.
The island is surrounded by coral reef with diverse and colourful fish, corals, invertebrates and turtles. The island itself is home to many different bird and plant species. During the summer months visitors are often lucky enough to witness the turtles laying their eggs on the beaches or the tiny hatchlings erupting out of the sand and making their mad dash to the water.
The trips are characterised by spectacular diving and snorkelling, the opportunity for students to try their hand at field research with their own projects, and a lot of fun as everyone gets to know each other.
The Heron Island field trip will cost approximately $520 for non-divers and $600 for divers, which includes the catamaran across to the island from Gladstone, accommodation, and food while on the island. It doesn't include getting to Gladstone, dive trips, or alcohol.
The last field trip was held on the January 22-28, 2004.
