Protozoa of Anerobic Habitats

In reference to the protozoan communities of extreme habitats, we have conducted surveys of the free-living flagellates associated with anaerobic habitats and many new taxa have been described. These communities include obligate and facultative anaerobes, with many taxa lacking classical mitochondria. Several organisms have been cultured for detailed morphological, molecular and cell biological studies. A large number of these taxa are of relevence to attempts to understand the early evolution of eukaryotic cells. Also of interest, some groups of flagellates known widely as endoparasites of animals turn out to have free-living members in external anaerobic habitats.
