BODEN RESEARCH CONFERENCES

With the generous support of the late Dr A. Boden FAA the Academy conducts a series of small specialist conferences in the biological sciences to enable active research workers in rapidly advancing fields to discuss current advances and problems.One or more conferences are organised each year with a membership of 20-30 and of about two days duration. The conferences are usually held at Thredbo in the Snowy Mountains in the first week of February. A sum of up to $10,000 is allocated for each conference. The supplementation of this sum is encouraged.The initiative, financial accountability and detailed arrangements for the conference are the responsibility of the organisers and the relevant scientific society/organisation which acts as a joint sponsor with the AcademySocieties and organisations are invited to submit a one page expression of intent to hold a conference in February 1998, setting out the aims, objectives and timeliness of the program and evidence of support from the relevant scientific society. Successful proposers will be invited to submit a detailed proposal for further assessment. The decision is announced in early December.Recent topics include:-· Immunological control of fertility: from gametes to gomads;· The role of DNA methylation in biological processes· Marsupial gametes and embryos· Nitric oxide in the nervous system· The molecular and cellular biology of the extracellular matrix

SELBY FELLOWSHIP

The Fellowship is financed through the generosity of the trustees of the Selby Scientific Foundation.PurposeFellowships are awarded to distinguished overseas scientists to visit Australia for public lecture/seminar tours and to visit scientific centres in Australia.Fellows are expected to increase public awareness of science and scientific issues and accordingly will be outstanding lecturers to the general lay public.ConditionsFellowships are tenable for visits of not less than two weeks and not more than three months. OHYAMA HEALTH FOUNDATION INC.

Ohyama Health Foundation is a non-governmental and non-profit organization, founded under the authorization of Ministry of Health and Welfare, Japan in August 1974.The late Mr Umeo Ohyama, ex-president of Toyo Steel Corporation, founded the organization with his 50 thousands holdings of his company as its fund, which amounts to approximately 1.5 billion Japanese yen at the year of 1996 and supports the organization’s various activities with its allotments and interests.One of the most famous parasitologists in the world, the late Dr Keizo Asami, ex-Dean, School of Medicine, Keio University, Tokyo, played a great role as the academic advisor for the organization since its foundation, followed by Dr Shogo Sasaki, also a well-known bacteriologist and ex-Dean of School of Medicine, Tokai University.The organization has been supported by a lot of advisers and officers represented in Dr Kazumine Kobari, Emeritus Professor of Ryukyu University with this fruitful experience of international health cooperation (please notice the list of officers on the other page).ActivitiesI. The screening will be charged on the committee for the judges of the grant within the foundation.5. The priorities on applicants who have no experience of granted from Ohyama Health Foundation for the equality of the opportunity.6. The grantor is requested to submit a report up to the end of the concerned fiscal year (the end of every March).7. The grant is maximized 500 thousands Japanese yen per share provided in US dollars. Cambridge Australia Trust

In collaboration with the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust in the United Kingdom, is offering up to ten scholarships annually, commencing October 1999, to Australian graduates of outstanding academic merit to do research leading to a PhD degree at the University of Cambridge. The scholarships are open to citizens of Australia who have a first class honours degree or its equivalent from an Australian University, who have gained admission to Cambridge, and are successful in winning a UK Overseas Research Student award (ORS) on the nomination of Cambridge University. Each scholarship is tenable for up to three years and covers fees and a maintenance allowance (Currently £6072 sterling per annum), as well as return air travel to UKBesides the Packer and Poynton Scholarships, one or more Kater, Kopke or Cambridge Australia Scholarships are offered each year. The total value of each scholarship, including the ORS award, is approximately $50,000 per annum, or $150,000 over three years.
