Field Work Opportunities

Where

Field trips are run four times a year to the Simpson Desert (The Red Outback) located in south-west Queensland (on the border of the Northern Territory).

How?

Travel is Provided by the Sydney University Desert Crew (involving a three day drive from Sydney). Trips run for approximately 20 days and cost around $AU 200.

What to do when you get there?

  • Pitfall trapping of reptiles and small mammals
  • Predator abundance surveys including spotlighting
  • Invertebrate sampling
  • Bird surveys
  • Vegetation surveys and seed collection
  • Help out on a variety of PhD and Honours projects

Where

Laboratory work is run at the University of Sydney, in the Heydon Lawerence building A08, on Science road Monday to Friday 10am to 6pm.

How you can help?

  • Help sort and identify seeds
  • Help sort and identify invertebrates
  • Converse with the Lab staff!
  • And there is always plenty of data entry
