My research is mainly focused on developing a better understanding
of the evolutionary patterns and processes at the molecular level
but it extends well beyond this to include mathematical, statistical,
and computational aspects of molecular evolution as well as the
more classical biological disciplines (genetics, ecology, taxonomy
and systematics).
Currently, the overall aims are to:
- develop reliable methods to analyse nucleotide and amino acid
sequences that have evolved under conditions that are more complex
than those accounted for by most of the commonly-used phylogenetic
methods;
- develop fast computer programs to support these methods; and
- compare genomes and components or products thereof in an evolutionary
context with emphasis on the organelle, bacterial, viral and nuclear
genomes.
