The diversity, ecology and evolution research group (DEERG) is based on widespread concern over the loss of biological diversity at the international, national and regional level. Thus the primary goals of DEERG are to:

• define and describe patterns of biological diversity, both extant and past.
• study processes that influence biological diversity, and the interactions between organisms, and organisms and their environment.
• develop understanding of approaches that enable sustainable use and restoration of environmental resources.

The main output of the research will enable better conservation and management of existing biological resources, restoration of degraded communities and habitats, and lead to more sustainable use of biological resources for the benefit of humanity.

Understanding evolution, ecology and biological diversity involves research at the level of ecosystem, habitat, community and individual. Thus members of DEERG use ecological, physiological and molecular tools.
